Murchison Falls National Park

Where the Nile Meets the Wild

📍 Uganda

Plan Your Safari

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park and one of the country’s most iconic safari destinations. Located in northwestern Uganda within the Albertine Rift, the park is a vast wilderness of savannah grasslands, woodland, riverine forests and wetlands, shaped by the powerful Victoria Nile as it passes through the landscape.

The park was gazetted in 1926 and established as a national park in 1952. Today, it is renowned for its spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, diverse birdlife and the dramatic Murchison Falls, where the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging downstream.

The park covers approximately 3,840 square kilometres, making it an exceptional destination for visitors looking for a classic Ugandan safari experience.

The Dramatic Murchison Falls

The park takes its name from Murchison Falls, one of Uganda’s most spectacular natural landmarks. At the falls, the Nile is compressed through a narrow gorge before the water bursts through the rocks in a powerful display of rushing white water.

The viewpoint at the top of the falls provides an unforgettable experience, with visitors able to hear the force of the water and watch the Nile continue its journey through the surrounding wilderness.

A hike to the top of the falls is also possible and offers a closer perspective of this remarkable natural feature.

Wildlife of Murchison Falls

Murchison Falls National Park is one of Uganda’s leading wildlife destinations. Its combination of savannah, woodland, riverine habitats and wetlands provides suitable environments for a wide range of species.

The park is home to four of Africa’s Big Five: elephants, lions, buffaloes and leopards. Other wildlife commonly associated with the park includes Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, warthogs, waterbucks and hippopotamuses.

The Nile also creates excellent opportunities for viewing animals at the water’s edge. Elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and other wildlife frequently gather along the river, while crocodiles and hippos can be observed in and around the water.

Visitors travelling to Murchison Falls can also combine their safari with a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where rhino tracking provides an opportunity to see Uganda’s rhinos and experience conservation outside the national park.

Game Drives Across the Savannah

Game drives are one of the best ways to explore Murchison Falls National Park and encounter its wildlife.

Morning and afternoon drives allow visitors to explore the savannah plains while searching for giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hartebeests, warthogs, lions and other wildlife.

Night experiences offer a different perspective of the park, allowing visitors to explore after dark and look for nocturnal wildlife under the guidance of experienced guides and appropriate park regulations.

The changing light across the savannah also makes Murchison Falls an excellent destination for wildlife photography.

Boat Cruises on the Nile

The Victoria Nile is one of the defining features of Murchison Falls National Park, and a boat cruise provides one of the most rewarding ways to experience the park.

The upstream cruise travels towards the base of Murchison Falls, where the river becomes increasingly dramatic as it approaches the narrow gorge. Along the riverbanks, visitors can observe hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, Uganda kobs and numerous waterbirds.

The Nile Delta cruise travels downstream towards the Victoria Nile Delta and Lake Albert. This section of the river provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, particularly for visitors interested in wetland and aquatic species.

Birdwatching in Murchison Falls

With more than 400 recorded bird species, Murchison Falls National Park is an important birding destination in Uganda.

The varied habitats support waterbirds, savannah species, woodland birds and forest species. Birds that visitors may encounter include the shoebill, African fish eagle, Goliath heron, giant kingfisher, saddle-billed stork, grey crowned crane, Abyssinian ground hornbill and Marabou stork.

The park can also be combined with birding experiences in the nearby Budongo Forest, creating a broader experience across several different habitats.

Forests and Nature Walks

Although Murchison Falls is widely recognised for its savannah wildlife, the wider conservation area also contains important forest habitats.

Budongo Forest and Kaniyo Pabidi Forest provide a contrasting experience, with mature trees, forest trails, birds and primates. Guided nature walks allow visitors to experience these environments at a slower pace and learn about the plants, wildlife and ecology of the area.

Rabongo Forest also provides opportunities for forest walks and primate viewing within the broader Murchison Falls landscape.

Hiking to the Top of Murchison Falls

The hike to the top of Murchison Falls is one of the most memorable activities available in the park.

The trail leads visitors towards the point where the Nile is forced through the narrow gorge. From the top, the sound and force of the water create an impressive experience, while the surrounding landscape provides opportunities for photography and scenic viewing.

The experience can be particularly rewarding when combined with a boat cruise, allowing visitors to appreciate the falls from both the river and the land.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

For visitors interested in completing Uganda’s Big Five experience, a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be combined with a Murchison Falls safari.

The sanctuary provides a protected environment for rhinos and offers guided rhino-tracking experiences. Visitors can learn about rhino conservation while observing these impressive animals in a natural setting.

Ziwa also supports other wildlife and bird species, making it more than simply a rhino experience.

Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest is an important forest destination within the wider Murchison Falls conservation landscape. It is known for its mature mahogany forest, rich birdlife and primate populations.

Chimpanzee tracking and forest walks provide opportunities to explore this different side of the region, while specialist birders can search for forest species that are unlikely to be encountered on the open savannah.

Combining Murchison Falls with Budongo creates a more diverse safari, bringing together large mammals, river wildlife, forest primates and specialist birdlife.
