5 Days Gorillas and Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda Safari
Uganda
Plan This SafariThe 5 Days Gorillas and Chimpanzee Trekking Uganda Safari combines two of Uganda's most extraordinary primate experiences: mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park.
The safari begins in Entebbe or Kampala before taking you through the scenic landscapes of southwestern Uganda to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Here, you will trek through the misty rainforest in search of an habituated mountain gorilla family. The encounter provides an opportunity to observe gorillas in their natural environment while learning about their behaviour and the conservation efforts protecting them.
Bwindi is also an important destination for birdwatching, forest exploration and cultural experiences. Following the gorilla trek, you will have an opportunity to experience the traditions and contemporary life of communities living around the forest, including a Batwa cultural experience.
The journey then continues to Kibale Forest National Park, one of Uganda's most important primate destinations. Kibale supports chimpanzees and a remarkable diversity of other primates, making it an excellent destination for travelers interested in rainforest wildlife.
Your Kibale experience includes a guided Bigodi Wetland walk, where you can look for colourful forest and wetland birds and other wildlife, followed by chimpanzee tracking through the tropical forest.
The safari also takes you through the scenic Fort Portal and crater-lake region, with opportunities to enjoy views of the Rwenzori Mountains, rolling hills, tea plantations and volcanic landscapes.
This five-day journey is designed for travelers who want to combine Uganda's two flagship great-ape trekking experiences with rainforest birding, cultural encounters and scenic western Uganda.

Make a stop at the Uganda Equator for photographs and a short break. You can also explore the nearby craft shops and souvenir stalls before continuing the journey.
Proceed towards Mbarara, where you will have lunch before continuing towards the Kigezi Highlands.
As you approach Bwindi, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with rolling green hills, cultivated slopes, banana plantations and winding mountain roads.

Wake up early and have breakfast before preparing for the highlight of the safari — mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Your safari guide will transfer you to the appropriate park briefing point, where you will meet the ranger guides and receive important information about gorilla trekking, forest safety and responsible wildlife viewing.
After the briefing, begin your trek through the dense Bwindi rainforest.
The duration of the trek varies depending on the location and movement of the gorilla family, terrain and weather conditions. The trails can be steep, muddy and physically demanding, but the experience of finally locating the gorillas makes the effort worthwhile.
As you move through the forest, your ranger guide will explain the ecology of Bwindi and help you understand signs of gorilla activity.
When the gorilla family is located, enjoy the permitted viewing period observing these remarkable great apes in their natural environment.
You may see a dominant silverback, females caring for young ones, juveniles playing and climbing through the vegetation, and other members of the family feeding, resting and moving through the forest.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Later in the afternoon or evening, depending on the duration of your trek, participate in a community and cultural experience around Bwindi.
A Batwa cultural experience provides an opportunity to learn about the history and traditions of people with longstanding connections to the forest. You may learn about traditional forest knowledge, medicinal plants, food gathering, crafts, music and dance.
Depending on the community experience selected, you may also observe traditional skills such as blacksmithing or local brewing.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, leave Bwindi and begin your journey towards Kibale Forest National Park.
The drive takes you through western Uganda, with opportunities to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Albertine Rift and the Fort Portal region.
As you approach Fort Portal, you may enjoy views towards the Rwenzori Mountains, famously known as the Mountains of the Moon.
Have lunch in Fort Portal before continuing towards Kibale.
In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk.
Bigodi is an important community-based wetland conservation area and is particularly popular with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
As you walk along the trails, look out for colourful forest and wetland birds, primates, butterflies and other wildlife. Among the bird species that may be encountered are the Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, Narina Trogon, bulbuls and other Albertine Rift forest species.
The walk also provides an opportunity to learn about local conservation efforts and community livelihoods surrounding the Kibale ecosystem.
After the walk, continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

As you walk through the forest, you may encounter several other primate species, including grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and other forest primates.
Your guide and ranger will explain the behaviour and ecology of the animals and introduce you to the plants, insects and butterflies encountered along the trail.
Chimpanzees are highly active animals and may move through the forest canopy or along the forest floor. Once they are located, you will have the permitted viewing period to observe their behaviour and take photographs.
After completing the trek, return to the lodge for lunch.
