The 3 Days Mount Karisimbi Hike is a challenging high-altitude trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, taking you to the summit of Mount Karisimbi, the highest of the Virunga Volcanoes located entirely within Rwanda. Rising to approximately 4,507 metres above sea level, Karisimbi is one of the most demanding volcano hikes in the region and is best suited to experienced hikers and travelers who are comfortable with long, strenuous mountain climbs.

The name Karisimbi is derived from the Kinyarwanda word Amasimbi, meaning “white shell,” a reference to the snow or frost that can sometimes cover its summit. The mountain forms part of the spectacular Virunga volcanic range and offers changing landscapes as you climb through lower montane forest, bamboo and higher-altitude vegetation before reaching the colder summit environment.

This three-day adventure combines a scenic drive from Kigali with an overnight mountain camping experience and a strenuous summit attempt. On the second day, you begin the ascent with an experienced mountain guide and ranger support, climbing to a high-altitude campsite around 3,700 metres. The following morning, you continue toward the summit before descending the mountain and returning to Kigali.

From the higher slopes and summit area, weather permitting, you can enjoy dramatic views across Rwanda's volcanic landscape and see neighboring Virunga peaks such as Mount Bisoke and other surrounding mountains. The forested slopes are also part of the wider habitat of the region's famous mountain gorillas, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Mount Karisimbi is cold, wet and exposed at higher elevations, so appropriate clothing and hiking equipment are essential. The trail can become muddy and slippery, particularly during rainy periods, while altitude and steep terrain make this a physically demanding adventure. Hikers should be adequately prepared and should follow the instructions of their mountain guides and rangers throughout the trek.

Your Safari Itinerary

Your female driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali in the morning. After a short briefing about the journey, you will begin the drive north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The journey takes you through Rwanda's famous rolling hills, agricultural landscapes and rural communities. As you approach Musanze and the Virunga volcanic region, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous, with views of the volcanic peaks appearing on the horizon when weather conditions are clear.
You will arrive in the Ruhengeri/Musanze area and check into your accommodation. The rest of the day is reserved for relaxation and preparation for the demanding hike ahead.
You can use this time to organize your hiking equipment, confirm that you have warm clothing and waterproof gear, and get an early night's rest. Your guide will also brief you about the following day's schedule and the conditions you should expect on the mountain.

Safari Tips

01 Mount Karisimbi is a demanding high-altitude hike and is best suited to travelers with good physical fitness and previous hiking experience.
02 Begin physical preparation several weeks before the trek through walking, hiking, stair climbing or other cardiovascular exercises.
03 Do not underestimate the effects of altitude. Move at a steady pace and follow the instructions of your mountain guide.
04 Weather can change quickly on the mountain, so waterproof and warm clothing should always be readily accessible.
05 Wear properly broken-in hiking boots to reduce the risk of blisters.
06 Keep your backpack as light as possible and consider hiring a local porter for heavier luggage.
07 Drink water regularly throughout the hike and carry enough snacks to maintain energy.
08 Protect cameras, phones and other electronics from rain and moisture.
09 The summit may be covered by cloud or mist, so panoramic views cannot be guaranteed.
10 Wildlife sightings, including gorillas, are possible in the broader forest landscape but are not guaranteed.
11 Be prepared for cold conditions at the high-altitude campsite and summit.
12 Follow the instructions of your guide, ranger and park authorities at all times.
13 Avoid rushing during the descent because steep and muddy sections can become slippery.
14 Respect the mountain environment by carrying waste back with you and avoiding damage to vegetation.
15 Supporting local porters and community services can provide direct benefits to people living around the park.
16 Keep a flexible attitude because hiking times can change according to weather, trail conditions and the group's pace.
