The 3 Days Mount Elgon National Park Mountaineering Safari is an adventurous hiking journey to eastern Uganda, combining mountain trekking, scenic Sipi Falls, wildlife, culture and some of the beautiful landscapes along the Kampala–Jinja–Mbale route.

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcanic mountain situated on the Uganda–Kenya border, with its Ugandan slopes protected within Mount Elgon National Park. The mountain rises to 4,321 metres at Wagagai Peak and offers a very different hiking experience from Uganda's other high mountains. Instead of a sharply pointed summit, Mount Elgon is characterized by an expansive summit area, dramatic cliffs, valleys, caves, waterfalls and a vast ancient caldera.

The safari introduces you to different vegetation zones as you ascend the mountain, with opportunities to encounter forest wildlife and a wide variety of birds. Mount Elgon's slopes are also surrounded by communities with a strong coffee-growing and agricultural heritage.

The adventure also includes a visit to the spectacular Sipi Falls, a series of waterfalls cascading down the slopes of Mount Elgon. The journey to and from eastern Uganda provides additional opportunities to experience attractions around Jinja, including the Nile and other scenic sites.

This 3-day itinerary is suitable for travelers looking for a short mountain adventure rather than a complete summit expedition. A full Mount Elgon summit circuit generally requires several days, so this itinerary focuses on a shorter hiking experience on the mountain while allowing time for Sipi Falls and other attractions.

Your Mount Elgon adventure begins after breakfast when your professional local female driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe.
Drive eastwards towards Jinja and Mbale, passing through some of the changing landscapes of central and eastern Uganda.
Along the way, you will see areas around Mabira Forest, agricultural communities and plantations, including sugarcane-growing areas around Lugazi. The route also takes you towards Jinja, one of Uganda's historic cities and a major tourism destination along the Nile.
Depending on the day's schedule, you can make selected stops around Jinja before continuing towards Mbale. The journey provides opportunities to see rural communities, agricultural landscapes and views of Mount Elgon as you approach eastern Uganda.
Have lunch en route before continuing towards Mbale and the Sipi area.
Upon arrival around Sipi Falls, explore the spectacular waterfalls and surrounding landscapes. Sipi Falls consists of a series of waterfalls flowing down the lower slopes of Mount Elgon, with scenic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding plains and valleys.

Safari Tips

01 Mountain hiking requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. Prepare by doing regular walking, hiking or other endurance activities before the safari.
02 Choose sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good grip because mountain trails can become muddy and slippery, particularly during rainy weather.
03 Carry several layers of clothing because temperatures can change as you gain elevation.
04 Always carry a waterproof rain jacket or poncho.
05 Carry sufficient drinking water and energy snacks for the hiking activity.
06 Follow the instructions of your mountain and park guides throughout the hike.
07 Consider hiring a porter if you have heavy luggage or would like assistance carrying your backpack.
08 Start the hike early to make the most of daylight and cooler temperatures.
09 Do not underestimate the physical demands of mountain terrain, even on a shorter hiking route.
10 Inform your guide about any medical condition, injury or medication requirements relevant to the hike.
11 Carry a headlamp and spare batteries in case the hike takes longer than expected.
12 Protect cameras, phones and other electronics from rain and moisture.
13 Bring binoculars if you are interested in birdwatching.
14 Take regular water and rest breaks rather than waiting until you become exhausted.
15 Follow designated trails and avoid walking away from your guide or hiking group.
16 Respect the mountain environment by avoiding littering and disturbing wildlife.
17 Ask permission before photographing local people during community encounters.
18 Carry some local currency for tips, crafts and personal purchases.
19 The weather on Mount Elgon can change quickly, so maintain flexibility in the hiking itinerary.
20 A full Mount Elgon summit circuit requires more time than this 3-day itinerary. Travelers seeking a complete summit expedition should allow additional days.
21 Optional activities such as longer hikes, abseiling at Sipi Falls or additional cultural experiences can be arranged separately.
