Experience one of Uganda's most extraordinary wildlife encounters on this 3-day Gorilla Trekking Safari in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Located in the Kisoro highlands of southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park protects 33.7 square kilometres of spectacular mountain scenery and is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, as well as golden monkeys and a variety of other wildlife. Its dramatic volcanic landscape is dominated by three extinct volcanoes; Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo creating a spectacular backdrop for your gorilla trekking adventure.

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga offers the opportunity to enter the montane forest accompanied by experienced trackers and park guides in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend the permitted viewing time observing their natural behaviour, including feeding, grooming, resting, playing and interacting with one another.

The safari also provides an opportunity to experience the local communities around Kisoro and enjoy the spectacular scenery of southwestern Uganda, often referred to for its rolling hills, volcanic mountains and terraced farmland.

With a professional English-speaking local female safari guide leading your journey, this private safari combines a scenic road trip, gorilla trekking, community experiences and the remarkable landscapes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

TRAVEL SMART

Safari Tips

01 Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, particularly on the steep terrain around Mgahinga, so prepare for several hours of walking.
02 Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip because trails can become muddy and slippery, particularly during rainy weather.
03 Wear long trousers and long sleeves to protect against vegetation and insects.
04 Carry a waterproof rain jacket because weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly.
05 Consider hiring a porter for the trek. Porters can assist with carrying your daypack and provide support on challenging sections of the trail while also benefiting the surrounding communities.
06 Carry sufficient drinking water and a few light snacks for the trek.
07 Follow all instructions provided by the park guides and rangers during the gorilla experience.
08 Maintain the required distance from the gorillas and avoid attempting to touch or feed them.
09 Avoid using flash photography around the gorillas.
10 Keep your voice low when observing the gorillas and allow them to behave naturally.
11 Do not trek when you are ill with a potentially infectious respiratory illness; protecting the gorillas from human diseases is an important part of responsible gorilla tourism.
12 A camera with a good zoom lens is useful because you should maintain the required distance from the gorillas.
13 Gorilla trekking permits should be arranged well in advance, particularly during busy travel periods.
14 The gorilla trek does not have a guaranteed fixed duration because the time required to locate the gorilla family varies according to its movements and location.
15 If you want to make the trek more comfortable, a porter can be arranged locally before the trek begins.
16 The best time for gorilla trekking can depend on your priorities, but the activity is available throughout the year. Rain can make trails more difficult, while drier periods can provide easier walking conditions.
