DETAILED ITINERARY
Stop 1: Meeting Point at Gaddafi National Mosque
Meet your female guide at the main gate of Gaddafi National Mosque in Kampala. Your guide will be wearing the company uniform to make identification easier.
Before beginning the experience, your guide will introduce the activity and explain how the cooking class will proceed. From the meeting point, you will walk to Owino Market, approximately 10 minutes away.
Stop 2: Owino Market – Shopping for Ugandan Food
Explore Owino Market with your guide and chef, who will introduce you to the local food-shopping experience.
The market visit is an important part of the tour because it allows you to see where ingredients for the meal are selected and purchased. Your guide will explain how shopping is carried out in local markets as you look for the food that will be prepared at the home.
The ingredients may include bananas, potatoes, cassava, yams, pumpkin, greens and groundnuts, depending on the dishes being prepared. If you prefer a type of fruit juice other than passion fruit, let your guide know during shopping so that a different fruit can be selected.
After shopping, drive approximately four kilometres from the market to the local home where the cooking experience will take place.
Stop 3: Traditional Cooking Class – Preparing Ugandan Food
At the home, the cooking experience begins with preparing the ingredients for the traditional meal.
Your female guide will demonstrate the preparation process and give you opportunities to participate. You can take part in the cooking from the kitchen to the dining room, or simply observe if you prefer.
Preparing Matooke and Other Local Foods
One of the first steps involves peeling the bananas that will be prepared as matooke. Your guide will demonstrate how the bananas are wrapped in banana leaves, a traditional preparation method used in the cooking experience.
You will also prepare other ingredients, including potatoes, cassava, yams, pumpkin and local greens. These ingredients are prepared for cooking together in a saucepan according to the method demonstrated by your guide.
Cooking on a Charcoal Stove
The meal is prepared using charcoal stoves. The cooking process generally takes about one hour, according to your tour notes.
Two charcoal stoves are usually used: one for the main food and another for the sauce, including groundnut sauce. This arrangement allows the different parts of the meal to be prepared so they are ready around the same time.
Your guide will also demonstrate how groundnuts are prepared for the sauce, introducing you to another important element of the cooking experience.
Making Fresh Fruit Juice
Next, learn how to prepare fruit juice using traditional methods. Passion fruit juice is usually prepared during the experience, but you can request another fruit by informing your guide while shopping at the market.
After the juice is prepared, it will be placed in the refrigerator while the other activities continue.
Stop 4: Traditional Home Tour
While the food is cooking, enjoy a guided tour around the home. Your guide will show you the different areas of the house, including living rooms and bedrooms, and explain the setting of a traditional home.
This part of the experience gives you an opportunity to learn about the home environment beyond the kitchen and understand how the different spaces are arranged.
Stop 5: Home Garden Visit
Continue to the small garden at the home, where different plants are grown. Your guide will explain the purposes of the plants and why such gardens are maintained around homes.
The guided tour around the home and garden takes approximately 15 minutes, according to your notes.
Stop 6: Mashing the Bananas – Completing the Matooke Preparation
Return to the cooking process for one of the most interesting parts of the culinary experience: mashing the bananas to prepare matooke.
This process takes approximately 10 minutes. Observe or participate as the cooked bananas are mashed and transformed into the familiar Ugandan dish.
This step brings together the earlier preparation and cooking stages and shows how the ingredients become part of the finished meal.
Stop 7: Traditional Dining – Enjoy the Meal You Prepared
Once the food is ready, it will be placed in serving dishes and taken to the dining room.
Sit down and enjoy the Ugandan cuisine prepared during the cooking class. This is the final part of the experience, giving you an opportunity to taste the dishes and appreciate the traditional methods you have learned throughout the tour.
The cooking class and traditional dining experience concludes after the meal.
Return to Your Hotel
At the end of the experience, you can order an Uber to transfer you back to your hotel, as described in the tour notes. Confirm your transport arrangements and any associated costs before the tour begins.
