The 4 Days Uganda Gorilla Trekking and Lake Bunyonyi Safari combines one of Uganda's most unforgettable wildlife experiences with a relaxing escape to one of the country's most scenic highland lakes.

The safari takes you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, where you will trek through the ancient rainforest in search of endangered mountain gorillas. Accompanied by experienced park rangers and your local female safari guide, you will have the opportunity to observe gorilla families in their natural forest habitat and learn about their behaviour and conservation.

After your gorilla trekking experience, the journey continues to Lake Bunyonyi, a beautiful highland lake surrounded by steep terraced hills and dotted with numerous islands. The lake is famous for its peaceful atmosphere, spectacular scenery and birdlife. A canoe excursion allows you to experience the lake from the water while taking in the surrounding islands, hills, villages and bird-rich wetlands.

The safari also provides opportunities to interact with local communities, including a cultural experience around Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi. You can learn about local traditions, livelihoods and the history of communities living around the forest and lake.

Starting and ending in Kampala or Entebbe, this four-day journey is an ideal combination of mountain gorilla trekking, rainforest adventure, cultural experiences and relaxation in the beautiful Kigezi Highlands.

Your Safari Itinerary

Your safari begins after breakfast when your local female safari guide picks you up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe and you begin the journey southwest towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Continue towards Mbarara, where you will have lunch before proceeding into southwestern Uganda. As the journey continues, the landscape gradually changes from open countryside into the dramatic hills of the Kigezi region.

Safari Tips

01 Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding because Bwindi has steep, uneven and muddy terrain.
02 Wear waterproof hiking boots with good grip.
03 Long trousers and long sleeves help protect you from vegetation and insects.
04 Carry a waterproof jacket because rain is possible at any time in the forest.
05 Carry enough drinking water and your packed lunch for the trek.
06 Hiring a porter is recommended for travelers who would like assistance with their daypack or difficult sections of the trail while also supporting local communities.
07 Follow the instructions of your ranger guide throughout the gorilla trek.
08 Maintain the required distance from the gorillas and never attempt to touch or feed them.
09 Avoid using flash photography around the gorillas.
10 A camera with a good zoom lens is useful because close physical approach is restricted.
11 Gorilla trekking duration varies depending on the location and movement of the gorilla family and the terrain.
12 Carry binoculars if you are interested in birdwatching around Lake Bunyonyi.
13 Keep electronic equipment protected from rain and moisture.
14 Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for the community and nature walks.
15 Ask permission before photographing people during cultural visits.
16 Respect local customs and traditions when visiting communities.
17 Carry some local currency for crafts, souvenirs and small personal purchases.
18 Arrange your gorilla permit well in advance, particularly during busy travel periods.
19 Allow flexibility in your itinerary because road travel times can vary with weather and road conditions.
20 Lake Bunyonyi is ideal for relaxing after gorilla trekking, so take time to enjoy the scenery and lodge surroundings.
