Your female driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali in the morning. After a short briefing about the journey, you will begin the drive north toward Volcanoes National Park.
The journey takes you through Rwanda's famous rolling hills, agricultural landscapes and rural communities. As you approach Musanze and the Virunga volcanic region, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous, with views of the volcanic peaks appearing on the horizon when weather conditions are clear.
You will arrive in the Ruhengeri/Musanze area and check into your accommodation. The rest of the day is reserved for relaxation and preparation for the demanding hike ahead.
You can use this time to organize your hiking equipment, confirm that you have warm clothing and waterproof gear, and get an early night's rest. Your guide will also brief you about the following day's schedule and the conditions you should expect on the mountain.

The 3 Days Mount Karisimbi Hike is a challenging high-altitude trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, taking you to the summit of Mount Karisimbi, the highest of the Virunga Volcanoes located entirely within Rwanda. Rising to approximately 4,507 metres above sea level, Karisimbi is one of the most demanding volcano hikes in the region and is best suited to experienced hikers and travelers who are comfortable with long, strenuous mountain climbs.
The name Karisimbi is derived from the Kinyarwanda word Amasimbi, meaning “white shell,” a reference to the snow or frost that can sometimes cover its summit. The mountain forms part of the spectacular Virunga volcanic range and offers changing landscapes as you climb through lower montane forest, bamboo and higher-altitude vegetation before reaching the colder summit environment.
This three-day adventure combines a scenic drive from Kigali with an overnight mountain camping experience and a strenuous summit attempt. On the second day, you begin the ascent with an experienced mountain guide and ranger support, climbing to a high-altitude campsite around 3,700 metres. The following morning, you continue toward the summit before descending the mountain and returning to Kigali.
From the higher slopes and summit area, weather permitting, you can enjoy dramatic views across Rwanda's volcanic landscape and see neighboring Virunga peaks such as Mount Bisoke and other surrounding mountains. The forested slopes are also part of the wider habitat of the region's famous mountain gorillas, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Mount Karisimbi is cold, wet and exposed at higher elevations, so appropriate clothing and hiking equipment are essential. The trail can become muddy and slippery, particularly during rainy periods, while altitude and steep terrain make this a physically demanding adventure. Hikers should be adequately prepared and should follow the instructions of their mountain guides and rangers throughout the trek.

Your Safari Itinerary
Wake up early, have breakfast and prepare your packed lunch and hiking equipment. You will then travel to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and a pre-hike briefing.
After meeting your mountain guide and ranger team, you will begin the trek toward Mount Karisimbi.
The hike takes you through changing vegetation zones as you gain altitude. The lower sections of the trail pass through dense forest and vegetation, while the higher slopes become increasingly colder and more rugged.
The ascent is strenuous, and the steep terrain combined with increasing altitude requires a steady pace. Your guide will determine appropriate rest points depending on the group's physical condition, weather and trail conditions.
You may hire a porter to carry your backpack and personal belongings. Apart from making the hike more comfortable, employing a local porter also provides direct economic support to communities around the park.
As you continue climbing, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly spectacular. On clear days, you may enjoy views across the Virunga volcanic chain and the surrounding Rwandan countryside.
The day's objective is to reach the high-altitude camping area at approximately 3,700 metres above sea level. Once you arrive, you will settle into camp, have dinner and rest in preparation for the final summit push the following morning.
Because temperatures can drop significantly at this altitude, warm clothing and suitable sleeping equipment are particularly important.

You will wake up early and prepare for the final section of your Mount Karisimbi climb.
After breakfast, you begin the ascent toward the summit. The final section can be particularly demanding because of the steep terrain, cold temperatures and high altitude. Your mountain guide will set a manageable pace and schedule rest stops as necessary.
Reaching the summit is the main achievement of the trek. At approximately 4,507 metres, the summit provides an impressive high-altitude environment and, when weather conditions are favorable, expansive views of the surrounding Virunga volcanic landscape.
You may be able to see other volcanic peaks, including Mount Bisoke, while distant views toward the Democratic Republic of Congo may also be possible depending on visibility. The summit is an excellent place for photographs, although weather conditions can change rapidly at this elevation.
After spending time at the summit, you will begin the descent. Descending can place considerable strain on the knees and legs, so it is important to maintain a controlled pace and follow your guide's instructions.
As you descend, you will move back through the higher vegetation zones toward the lower slopes. Depending on trail conditions and wildlife activity, there may be opportunities to observe birds or other forest wildlife. Mountain gorillas inhabit the broader Virunga landscape, but a gorilla encounter during this hike should never be expected or guaranteed.
Once you reach the designated meeting point, your driver will meet you and begin the journey back to Kigali.
Upon arrival in Kigali, your 3 Days Mount Karisimbi Hiking Tour comes to an end.
