3 Days Mount Karisimbi Hike

Overview

The 3 days Mount Karisimbi hike allows you to hike up the Karisimbi Volcano. Mt Karisimbi is the tallest of all the 8 volcanoes-mountains. Of all the 8 volcanoes, experienced hikers can hike Karisimbi because it presents a real challenge. Mt Karisimbi stands tall at 4,507 m above sea level, making it the 5th-tallest mountain in Africa. Karisimbi derives it names from “Amasimbi” to mean “white shell” to refer to the white -capped summit that is often seen at the top of Karismbi volcanoes.

Mount Karisimbi can be hiked at any time of the year. However, to organise this hike, you need to at least book the hike a week in advance to allow the Rwanda Development Board to prepare for you.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Drive to Volcanoes National Park.

Your female driver guide will pick you up from Kigali Town in the morning and drive you to Ruhengeri. You will spend the night at the hotel in the area around the Volcanoes National Park as you wait for the hike the next day.

Day 2: Hiking Karisimbi

Have breakfast early, carry packed lunch for the day and then report for briefing at the park headquarters in Kinigi. At 8 am, you will start the hike along with your ranger and armed guard, who will be allocated to your group and will follow the trail towards Mt. Karisimbi Hike. You may need to hire a porter to carry your bags, and they may also give you a push or pull up the mountain. You will go hiking as high as 3700m before you can end your day. At this point, you will have your dinner and spend the night.

Day 3: hike to the top and descend.

Early in the morning, you will continue to the top of the mountain. Once you get there, you can take a nature walk around the summit and take some pictures. It is a strenuous hike, but it will be very rewarding at the end of the day. The scenery from the top is very beautiful, and since it’s the highest point, you will be able to see the summits of other volcanoes like Bisoke, Nyiragongo in Congo, among others. There is also a chance of meeting some gorillas along your way as you hike.

Mt Karisimbi is cold, therefore you should have some warm clothes so you are warm enough. Later, you will walk back down the mountain, and your driver will be there to drive you back to Kigali. This will mark the end of your hiking trip.
